Social and Economic Well-Being Plan

Background

Well-being means having what we need to create and maintain the lives we want for ourselves. Well-being includes our health, financial security and enjoying what we do every day. It also means having positive relationships, and feeling like we belong in our community.

The Provincial Government is developing a renewed approach to addressing poverty, as well as increasing focus on well-being for children, youth and their families. There is a close link between reducing poverty and improving well-being. Therefore, this work will be combined under a Social and Economic Well-Being Plan.

Social and Economic Well-Being: Our Focus

The Provincial Government has developed basic ideas to guide discussions on how to best address social and economic well-being for all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

This includes a lifecycle approach and six components of well-being. In November 2020 the Provincial Government launched Health Accord NL which produced a final report of calls to action on improving specific social, economic, and environmental conditions affecting our health. The Social and Economic Well-Being Plan has been informed by the work of the Health Accord NL and the extensive engagement process that was part of that work.

A Lifecycle Approach

Our well-being begins before we are even born and continues throughout our lives. What happens in our early years of life can affect our long-term well-being. It is also possible that our well-being can change throughout our lives, depending on what is happening around us. The Provincial Government is proposing a lifecycle approach to addressing social and economic well-being for all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. A lifecycle approach means looking at what we need at various stages of our lives to ensure well-being.
