Agriculture Depredation Policy Review (Shooting of Moose at Night on Farms)

Now Closed

This online engagement was hosted on engageNL from February 21 to March 31, 2020. Below is a record of this engagement.

Purpose

The Provincial Government is reviewing its current Agriculture Depredation Policy as it relates to shooting of moose on farms at night.  In support of this review the Department of Fisheries and Land Resources will be hosting online (engageNL) and public consultations to encourage public and stakeholder input related to the policy.

The Department of Fisheries and Land Resources updated the Agriculture Depredation Policy in November 2018 to be consistent with the Wild Life Regulations as it relates to shooting wildlife at night.  The policy currently permits farmers to shoot problem moose (causing significant crop damage on farms) during daylight hours ONLY from the period June 15 to December 7 in any given year.

The consultations seek to obtain public views about whether farmers should be permitted to shoot moose at night, and, if so, how the activity can be done in a manner that effectively considers the risk to public safety.
