Newfoundland and Labrador International Year of the Salmon Fly Competition
Now Closed
This online engagement was hosted on engageNL from April 2 to June 21, 2019.
Overview
Newfoundland and Labrador’s wild Atlantic salmon resource is a shared heritage, and the greatest salmon conservationists in the world are the 30,000 anglers from this province who are the true stewards of this resource – along with the many other people and communities directly connected to our salmon rivers.
We invite everyone in Newfoundland and Labrador to help celebrate this heritage as we join with our partners to celebrate the International Year of the Salmon. Along with the salmon fly competition, other activities planned for Newfoundland and Labrador in 2019 include:
Five youth angling and salmon conservation education events;
Youth essay and poster contests focusing on the importance of salmon to Newfoundland and Labrador;
Creation of a salmon ecology exhibit at Salmonier Nature Park; and
A mobile salmon conservation vehicle that will travel and attend public events.
International Year of the Salmon (IYS) is a project launched by the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission (NPAFC) and the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization (NASCO) and other partners, with international events planned for 2019 and continuing into 2022.
International Year of the Salmon highlights the importance of our salmon resource, and how people can help ensure the conservation and restoration of salmon and salmon habitats, especially in light of increasing environmental change.
Get Involved
As part of International Year of the Salmon celebrations in Newfoundland and Labrador, the Department of Fisheries and Land Resources is hosting a provincial International Year of the Salmon Fly Competition.
The competition will have two streams: Angler’s Choice, to name the province’s favourite existing fly design; and Designer’s Choice, to select the province’s best original salmon fly design.
Angler's Choice
A panel of some of the province’s finest fly-tying enthusiasts have compiled a shortlist of the most commonly used salmon flies on Newfoundland and Labrador’s rivers. The design that lands the most votes will be designated Newfoundland and Labrador’s Salmon Fly.
You will have until June 21, 2019 to select your favourite salmon fly!
Fly designers/tiers will have the opportunity to create an original fly design that best illustrates the theme of Salmon Conservation and Angling in Newfoundland and Labrador. The fly must be accompanied by a brief description explaining its design features and the significance of the design to its creator. Entries for Designer’s Choice will be accepted until June 21, 2019.
