As part of the process of decolonization, The Rooms recognizes the colonial history of the name of the Mary March Provincial Museum in Grand Falls-Windsor. As such, there is a commitment to rename the museum.
The Rooms is seeking the public’s input to determine a new name that works towards reconciliation, healing and respectful commemoration of Indigenous Peoples’ histories, and is more accurate.
All viewpoints that have been made and those that will come from the planned consultations will be duly considered with respect to any action on the renaming of the Mary March Provincial Museum.
The Provincial Government and Indigenous Leadership remain committed to advancing Reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, promoting inclusive communities and honouring the history of the institution as a community museum.
In 2020, The Rooms struck a committee to advise on the renaming of the Mary March Provincial Museum in Grand Falls-Windsor. The committee is comprised of councillors from the Town of Grand Falls-Windsor, a representative from the town’s heritage group, representatives from the Indigenous Governments, as well as two representatives from The Rooms and Regional Museums staff. All Indigenous groups in the province were approached at the outset with an invitation to participate if they wished.
To date, there have been two suggested names put forward to the Provincial Government by this committee.
The Provincial Government’s goal is to find a new name for the museum that is reflective of the content of the museum, the visitor experience it offers as a tourism attraction in this region, its history as a community museum, as well as a name that is respectful of efforts towards healing and commemoration of Indigenous Peoples histories in this province.
Get Involved
Participants will have the opportunity to select one of two names proposed by the advisory committee. Additional space will be provided for participants to submit their own recommended name.
