On October 17, 2019, the Provincial Government released The Adult Literacy Action Plan, a five-year action plan for adult literacy in Newfoundland and Labrador. The plan consists of 30 actions to help adult Newfoundlanders and Labradorians develop the literacy skills they need to lead healthier, more productive lives and fully participate in the province’s economy. As stakeholders in this plan, the Provincial Government is looking to employers to provide important perspectives on literacy, particularly as it relates to the workplace.
Workplace literacy refers to the skills employees need to have in order to be successful at work functions and manage the demands of their jobs in a healthy, productive way. These skills include essential skills (e.g., reading, writing, numeracy) and employability or “soft” skills (e.g., communication, collaboration, problem solving).
We are seeking feedback from private sector employers on various issues related to literacy in the workplace, particularly information on the challenges faced and input on how those challenges can be addressed.
We are seeking input from:
Employers from major industries in this province, such as:
Aquaculture;
Agriculture;
Oil and gas;
Mining;
Forestry;
Technology; and
The community sector.
Employers from in-demand industries with entry-level positions, such as:
Hospitality;
Retail sales;
Food service; and
Manufacturing.
Employers from any other industries that would like to provide feedback on workplace literacy issues they may face.
The information we receive will be reviewed by the Department of Education. All feedback will be considered when determining how the Provincial Government can best support private sector employers in meeting their workplace literacy needs.
Please do not include your name or any information that could identify you. The collection and protection of information is being done under the authority of section 61(c) of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act, 2015, for the purpose of collecting employer feedback on workplace literacy. Please be assured that your answers will be kept strictly confidential and collated in aggregate form only.
If you have any questions about how this information will be collected, used and disclosed, please contact Cory Buck at [email protected].
