Background

WERAC is a legislated, volunteer, independent advisory body appointed by the Provincial Government to advise on the establishment and management of our province’s wilderness and ecological reserves.

The document A Home for Nature is a blueprint for developing a collection or system of protected areas for the Island of Newfoundland. Provincial protected area planning for Labrador will follow and will be specific to the unique geography of Labrador. The release of this Plan for the Island of Newfoundland provided the first opportunity for the public to provide input on the Plan.

The boundaries proposed in this Plan are not final. WERAC is engaging the public in two phases.

In Phase 1, (to October 1, 2020) WERAC presented the proposed Plan and gathered initial feedback from the public, including information on which activities people like to do in proposed reserves.

Phase 2 is the required consultation process for establishment of each individual reserve. WERAC will use information gathered from phase 1 to suggest management approaches for each site. For each site, there will be opportunities for the public to provide input on the boundaries and management approach.
